Folic Acid, 100 tablets, 800 mcg
Folic Acid, Essential B Vitamin
Folic Acid, an essential B vitamin, supports immune system function.
What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is a member of the water soluble B vitamin family, it is also known as folacin or folate. Its name is derived from the Latin word folium which means foliage. It was first discovered in the 1940s when it was extracted from spinach. It should be replenished daily due to the fact that the body cannot store it for long periods of time.
What does Folic Acid do?
Folic acid is of particular importance for women of childbearing age as there can be serious consequences for the fetus when folic acids levels are too low.
Folic acid deficiency is the most common vitamin deficiency in the world. Half of the folic acid in foods is depleted through cooking, processing and long-term storage, thus supplementation of this vital nutrient is highly recommended.
Research indicates that Folic Acid may:
- Be necessary for the production of both DNA and RNA
- Be essential for proper cellular division and the transmission of the genetic code to all newly formed cells
- Be essential for the health of red blood cells and the production of proteins and various amino acids
- Be crucial for closure of the fetus? neural tube during pregnancy
- Be effective in enhancing cognitive performance in older adults
- Help support healthy immune function
- Be shown to lower homocysteine levels, even when the levels are increased by lipid lowering medications
The RDA for Folic Acid is 400 mcg per day. Folic acid is depleted in persons who drink alcohol, smoke, or take oral contraceptives. Pregnancy doubles a woman?s requirements for folic acid.
